When Parents Realize They May Be Moving Too Fast Toward Divorce
Mediation Helps Families Make Thoughtful, Not Rushed, Decisions
The Client's Core Question:
“Are we divorcing because we're exhausted, or because it's truly the right decision?”
Some parents reach out convinced divorce is the only path forward, yet are operating from fear and burnout rather than clarity. The couple had not yet worked with a Divorce Coach, Therapist, or https://www.birtlaw.com/counseling-can-make-your-illinois-divorce-or-separation-easier and they were not sure if they were on the right path. They felt they had not yet reached a point of "irreconcilable differences.'
Practitioner Approach:
Mediation slowed the emotional pace and clarified the steps involved, helping parents distinguish urgency from necessity. I provided them with a Divorce Readiness Assessment to gauge their ability to proceed with divorce negotiations as well as to gauge their perception of the other party's readiness to proceed. In addition to flagging whether a referral to another provider is warranted, this Assessment helps me shape the timing of mediation sessions, the frequency of mediation sessions, and the need for individual vs joint sessions.
“Slowing down the divorce process allowed these parents to make thoughtful choices instead of rushing into decisions they might regret.” ~ Erin Birt, Attorney & Mediator
Value Provided:
Taking a break to consult with other professionals prevented regret, reduced conflict, and created space for thoughtful decision-making.
