🌿 Supporting Children Through Divorce in DuPage County: A 2025 Scholarship Story
At Birt Family Law, a DuPage County divorce and mediation practice based in Wheaton, the Restorative Divorce® Pathway Scholarship was created to extend support beyond the legal process to recognize and encourage young people who are growing through family change with strength, reflection, and purpose.
This week, we had the opportunity to meet one of our 2025 Recognition Award recipients in person before he graduates and heads off to college, and it was a moment that stayed with us.
A Story of Steady Growth
When Alexander's parents divorced, he was still young. He described the experience as one of adjustment, moving between two homes, learning new routines, and finding his footing through change. Over time, that experience became something more. He developed a thoughtful perspective on resilience, patience, and what it means to move forward even when life doesn't look the way you expected.
What stood out most was his insight:
“Divorce was not the end of the world. It was difficult, but it taught me that things usually work out, even if not in the way you expected.”
Alexander's parents worked to provide consistency and stability between their two homes, and it shows in who he is today. A steady, grounded, and reflective perspective is exactly what this scholarship was designed to recognize.
Turning Experience Into Purpose
Alexander plans to attend Illinois State University to study social work, with the goal of using his experiences to help others. This is what Restorative Divorce growth looks like: not just moving through something difficult but choosing to use it in a way that supports others.
A Moment Worth Recognizing
We had the honor of presenting Alexander with his Recognition Award and certificate in person. He also shared that he plays a musical instrument, something he has continued to pursue with dedication and consistency. Such moments remind us that dedication and resilience is often showing up, continuing forward, and building a life with intention just like Alexander is doing.
Why This Matters for Families
At Birt Family Law, we work with parents throughout Wheaton, Naperville, and surrounding DuPage County communities who are navigating divorce and trying to make thoughtful decisions for their children.
The Restorative Divorce® process is designed to reduce unnecessary conflict and create a more stable path forward, especially for children who are learning to adjust to change. What happens after the legal process matters just as much. This scholarship is one small way to acknowledge that children are not just affected by divorce but that they are also capable of growth, insight, and leadership because of it.
Alexander's story is a reflection of that truth.
Looking Ahead
We are proud to recognize all of our 2025 scholarship recipients and grateful for the opportunity to meet Alexander and hear more about his journey. We look forward to seeing the impact he will make as he continues his education and steps into a future shaped not just by change, but by purpose.
