When a Family Needed Calm During a Medical Crisis
Protecting the Parenting Plan While Supporting the Child
The Client's Core Question:
“How do we make decisions when emotions are high and time matters?”
An unexpected medical issue involving a child created immediate stress and disagreement between two parents. Both were deeply concerned for their child's wellbeing, yet fear, urgency, and uncertainty made communication difficult. Each parent worried about making the wrong decision, and tensions rose quickly.
Practitioner Approach:
Rather than allowing fear to drive reactions, mediation focused first on stabilizing the situation. We clarified the existing parenting plan, identified shared priorities related to the child's care, and addressed where flexibility was appropriate in light of the medical needs.
“Mediation offered calm, clarity, and direction during a stressful medical moment for this family.” ~ Erin Birt, Co-Parenting Custody Mediator
From there, we created a temporary, child-centered agreement designed to support timely medical decision-making while preserving the integrity of the broader parenting framework. The process emphasized clear communication, mutual understanding, and practical coordination during a highly emotional moment.
Value Provided:
With a clear plan in place, both parents were able to refocus on their child's needs without escalating conflict. Mediation provided calm, direction, and reassurance, allowing the family to navigate a stressful situation with greater stability and cooperation.
