How to Help Children of Divorce Struggling with the Shelter in Place Order in DuPage County?

Children of divorce have higher levels of stress during the Shelter in Place order than peers with two parents at home.  Also, children without siblings have unique stress in that this is likely the first time since infancy that they have not been with their peers on a consistent basis. To help a child struggling with the Shelter in Place Order throughout Illinois and in DuPage County, parents should follow their consistent parenting plan, compromise to put the child first, and use available resources to help the child engage with their parents and remain connected with others.

A child's world has been turned upside down by the current pandemic and they will look to a parent for guidance and as an example.  Keeping a consistent schedule will not only help the child feel comfortable as it is predictable, it will help facilitate co-parenting and e-learning during a difficult time.  Compromises will need to be made during the short time families are ordered to stay home. This is also an opportunity for a new beginning and to adjust co-parenting to be more child-centric.  All decisions should be made after careful consideration of the child's best interests and a discussion of same with the other parent.

Ideas for maintaining a united front as parents are:

  • Agree upon and use a similar e-learning schedule Monday - Friday
  • Agree upon consistent and predictable transportation of the child between parent's residences
  • Agree upon a set time each week to FaceTime, Zoom, or Google meet up with extended family

Children will look to their parents as examples during this unprecedented time. This is an opportunity to create a safe and predictable environment and long lasting positive memories.

Resources to Help Children of Divorce Struggling with the Shelter in Place Order in DuPage County

After both parents have agreed upon a consistent schedule for a child, use available resources at home to implement and enhance the predictable schedule for the child.  Some options are the free access to books and articles via Scholastic.  Download the free apps for MessengerKids, FaceTime, Zoom, or Google to allow a child to visually interact with family and friends. Get creative by pulling out old toys and games from the basement or closet and have creative time each day after lunch or dinner.
